Newport Renewables recently completed the installation of solar panels on a fifth Rhode Island school.

In total, six schools: Quest Montessori School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Lincoln School, St. Michael’s Country Day School, St. Mary Academy BayView, and Cranston High School West each received grants from that state’s Office of Energy Resources, and Commerce RI Renewable Energy Fund. The money was sued to install solar PV systems up to 50 kW in size.

Construction began on the projects shortly after the grants were awarded in July.

“The solar school projects are a great way for schools to expose their students to renewable energy without a large financial commitment or risk, while saving thousands of dollars on annual electricity costs,” Newport Renewables co-founder Stuart Flanagan said in a written release.

A weather station and monitoring system were installed at each school to support the understanding of the technology installed. The system monitoring interface will allow the solar array’s data to be accessed by the school and the public, allowing other schools to participate in a statewide analysis of solar production.
